MARCH,
2002: ASCENSIONS IN SHKHELDA REGION
My
project "Open Caucasus " intends, beside of my own ascensions,
the participation of the wellknown climbers from the whole World,
for they could estimate the situation and climbing prospects of
Caucasus and inform them through mass media to people.

Therefore,
as the next step in this project, I have invited the American
climber Karlos Buhler and
his friend Spaniard Joan Sole'
for fulfilment of ascensions on Caucasus in March of
this year. They have arrived. Accomodation in hotels on Caucasus
and transfer by car were settled by my sponsor from Rostovs-Don.
I was helped by my friend climber
Igor Politiko. It was
our first joint experience, and I felt the heavy responsibility
for my friends.

From
3rd of March till 24th of March were accomplished:
- The
ascension on Peak of Caucasus (4037m),
- Karlos
and Joan - premiere at the ice cascade in a Shkhelda valley
,

The attempt to open the new route on peak Nauka (Science)
(4200 m) This top belongs to Massif Shkhelda, difference
of heights 1450m.
After we climbed 500 m on height, we have been forced to turn
back because of the strong snowfall (4 days) and avalanches
danger.
- On 16 -18th of March I had to be in Moscow, on the presentation
of the film "Russian 8000-Peak" about the first
ascent the Lhotse Middle.
During this time my friends have ascended
the West top of Elbrus (5642 m), which is considered
as the highest point of Europe.

- After my returning from Moscow we have made the second attempt
of opening of a new route at the North Face of Shkhelda , but
again have cathed the strong and long snowfall. This March on
the Central Caucasus was quite abnormal, very warmly, constantly
low atmospheric pressure and lots of snow.
In spite of that, we had realized the minimum of the program,
Karlos and Joan have acquanted themself with Caucasus very close,
and I hope the
information about this small expedition will appear on the pages
of press with their help.
